A harmonic oscillator is any physical system that varies above and below its mean value with a characteristic frequency, f. Common examples of harmonic oscillators include pendulums, masses on springs, and RLC circuits. 

The harmonic oscillator is a canonical system discussed in every freshman course of physics. Thus, you might skip this lecture if you are familiar with it.

A Harmonic oscillator is a system which, when displaced from its equilibrium position, experiences a restoring force F proportional to the displacement x:

F = - kx

where k is a positive constant.
